Molybdenum
Molybdenum is a refractory metalhaving its melting point at 2616ºC. Molybdenum is characterized by high elasticity modulus, high thermal resistance and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is also well-known for its corrosion resistance in melt and alkali vapors.
Benefits of molybdenum products
Molybdenum is a relatively inexpensive metal that makes molybdenum products available to a wide range of consumers.
Molybdenum is non-toxic and non-radioactive, and is safe for use in food and medical applications.
Molybdenum alloys are highly heat resistant, and therefore ideal for use in the aerospace and energy industries.
Molybdenum can be easily processed by various methods such as forging, rolling, welding, etc., enabling to create parts of complex shapes and designs.
Molybdenum has a low corrosion potential, allowing it to be used in aggressive environments without loss of quality and properties.
Molybdenum products have high strength and resistance to mechanical stress, which makes them indispensable for production of machine parts and mechanisms.
Molybdenum is slightly overpassed by tungsten in terms of mechanical strength but better fit for pressure shaping. Moreover, thanks to lower (compared with tungsten) density molybdenum-based alloys have higher specific strength (at temperature below 1370ºC).
Moreover, price for molybdenum is slightly below that of tungsten. Thanks to its properties and qualities molybdenum is one of the most common industrial metals widely used in electric and vacuum, as well as in radio-electronic industry, for special-purpose machinery and tools, and in aerospace. Molybdenum is often used as alloying agent to enhance strength characteristics of the latter.
Molybdenum marking
The following marking is the most common for molybdenum:
МЧ– pure molybdenum without any admixture whatsoever;
МЧВП– pure molybdenum without any impurities produced by vacuum melting;
МРН– multipurpose molybdenum, no admixture, though high number of impurities than the previous two;
МК– with silicon alkaline admixture;
ЦМ– with zirconium or titanium admixture;
МР– molybdenum-rhenium alloy;
МВ– tungsten-molybdenum alloy.
